Hey everyone!
With summer in full swing, I’ve noticed a few wasps buzzing around my yard, and I’m worried about them nesting near my home. I’ve done some research, but I still have a lot of questions.
To give you some context, I live in a suburban area where there are plenty of trees and flowers, which seems to attract these little guys. I’ve heard that wasps can be beneficial for the ecosystem, but I definitely don’t want them too close to my living space!
There are definitely ways to keep wasps at bay! One method I’ve used is to ensure that any food sources are sealed up. Wasps are attracted to sweet smells, so keeping trash and compost covered is key.
What about you all? Has anyone tried creating decoy nests? I heard that can work!
Yes! I’ve heard that hanging a decoy nest can deter them since they are territorial. You can make one easily with a brown paper bag. Just hang it up somewhere visible in your yard.
Just be careful though! If you’re not careful in hanging it, it might attract them instead. It’s best to place it away from areas where you spend a lot of time.
For natural repellents, I’ve had success with peppermint oil. Mix some with water and spray it around the areas where you’ve seen them. They dislike the smell and tend to stay away!
Has anyone else tried this? What were your results?
That sounds interesting! I love using essential oils for various things. Just to clarify, do you use it straight or dilute it?
Definitely dilute it! A few drops mixed with water should do the trick. Just make sure to reapply it regularly, especially after it rains.
If you find a nest, it’s usually best to call a professional. But if you’re determined to handle it yourself, doing it at night when they’re less active is crucial.
What are your thoughts on DIY nest removal?
I agree with you @abeccot. But even then, make sure to wear protective clothing and have a backup plan in case they swarm! It can turn dangerous quickly.
Totally! I once tried to remove one myself and ended up getting stung. It’s not worth the risk if you’re not experienced.
I think the best time to take preventive measures is early in the spring. That’s when they start looking for new nesting spots. If you can tackle it then, you’ll save yourself a lot of trouble down the line.
What about other preventative tips?
Thanks for that tip! I’ll make a note to be proactive. What about planting certain flowers or plants? Do they really attract or repel wasps?
Some plants like mint and basil can deter them, while others can attract them. It’s all about balance in your garden! You might want to do some research on the types of plants in your area.
