Hey everyone,
I’ve seen a ton of advice online about mixing boric acid with peanut butter to make a kind of DIY bait for roaches. People swear it works better because the peanut butter attracts them, but I’ve never tried it myself. I’m curious if anyone here has real experience with it.
I’ve used the peanut-butter mix before and it definitely got their attention. They went right for it. Took a few days to notice fewer roaches, but yeah, it works when they actually eat it.
Be careful not to make it too gooey. If it stays sticky, they can eat around the boric acid instead of taking it in. I keep mine thick so the powder blends in well.
I did it in bottle-cap bait stations. That kept things tidy and away from my dog. Results weren’t instant, but it made a dent after about a week.
Honestly, plain boric acid dust worked faster for me. The bait balls attracted them, but the dust knocked them down quicker. Might depend on how bad the infestation is.
The peanut butter trick is great if your roaches aren’t exploring much. The smell pulls them out of hiding, which the dust alone doesn’t always do.
@ApartmentArcher Is right, texture matters. If it dries out too much, they ignore it. If it’s too wet, the boric acid sinks. I mix small batches so it stays fresh.
I used it in a rental last year. It helped, but only after I added some sticky traps nearby so I could see where they were traveling. Worked best when placed near warm appliances.
If you’ve got pets or kids, I’d still keep everything behind appliances or inside those little DIY bait lids. Peanut butter is way too tempting otherwise.
I tried jelly instead of peanut butter once. Didn’t work nearly as well. They really seem to go for fats over sweets.
@BugMathMajor and @UrbanCrawlClub both have good points. The mix does work, but it’s not magic. You’ll get the best results pairing it with good cleaning and sealing up moisture sources.
