Hey everyone!
Curious if yellow jackets return to the same spot each year to build their nests. Any insights or experiences to share?
Does anyone know if yellow jackets nest in the same place every year? Found a nest in my shed last summer and I’m worried they’ll come back.
From my experience, yellow jackets don’t typically nest in the same exact spot each year, but they can for a few consecutive years especially if the spot is ideal for them.
It seems so!They don’t usually reuse the exact same nest. However, they might build a new nest nearby if the conditions are good.
Oh, really? I’m so worried about my shed
I’ve had them in my garden for two years in a row now. Not the exact same location but within a few feet.
Does anyone have tips on how to deter them from coming back? I’ve heard various methods but not sure what actually works.
Noise and vibrations can be effective deterrents. Placing a wind chime or any oscillating equipment near the area might help.
I’ve tried mothballs and they did seem to help a bit, but I’m always looking for more effective solutions.
Thank you very much. I will try these methods
I agree. Also, spraying areas with a mixture of peppermint oil and water can sometimes keep them away.
What’s the best way to safely remove a yellow jacket nest?
Late evening or early morning when they are less active is the best time. Use professional sprays, but if it’s too large, you might want to call a pest control service.
Also, you should always wear protective clothing if you decide to do it yourself. Better safe than sorry!
I second . I personally had a bad experience trying to do it midday. It’s definitely worth it to wait until they’re dormant.
I’ve noticed yellow jackets pop up in the same eaves spot each summer. Makes me wonder if they’re marking their turf.
I saw one take down spot replaced last year, but the new nest popped up just a few feet away. Maybe they follow scent trails or old hive vibes?
@StingStopper Yup, same here, I sealed the first nest site, but next year they chose a crack in the fascia. Scent trails are real, folks.
I invested in a lightweight camera to scope the wall cavity before treating it, and sure enough, they’d been using it repeatedly.
They reset in the same general area yes, but usually choose a different hole or aperture. Good reason to patch up all potential spots, not just one.
