Do Ultrasonic Tick Repellents Really Work?

Hey everyone!
I’ve been doing some research on ultrasonic tick repellents lately and wanted to hear your thoughts and experiences. I enjoy hiking and spending time outdoors, but I’m always worried about ticks and the diseases they carry. Ultrasonic repellents seem like a convenient solution, but I’m skeptical.

From what I’ve read, some studies suggest that these devices might not be effective at all. They work by emitting high-frequency sounds that are supposed to repel ticks and other pests, but do they really do anything?

I’ve tried using one of those ultrasonic repellents last summer. Honestly, I didn’t notice any difference in tick encounters compared to previous years. I even wore regular bug spray as a control, and I definitely got ticks while using the ultrasonic device.

That’s disappointing to hear. Did you use it in a heavily infested area, or was it more of a general outdoor setting?

It was in a wooded area that usually has a lot of ticks. I think it’s helpful to use multiple methods rather than relying solely on one device.

There are a few studies that show ultrasonic devices might not be effective against ticks. Most research focuses on mosquitoes, which are more affected by sound waves. Ticks rely heavily on scent and carbon dioxide rather than sound.

That makes sense! It sounds like ticks might be too stubborn for sound waves to bother them. Have you found any specific studies on this?

Yes! I found a study from a university that tested various repellents, and the ultrasonic devices didn’t perform well. I can dig it up if you’d like!

I haven’t used those devices, but I prefer natural repellents like essential oils. I make my own blend and spray it on before I head out. Have you tried that instead?

I’ve heard of that! What oils do you use, and do they really work?

I use a mix of lemon eucalyptus and lavender. It’s worked well for me, but I do need to reapply more frequently than with commercial repellents.

I’ve been using a combination of DEET and a tick repellent band on my boots. I can’t say I’ve had any issues while using that combo.

That sounds like a solid plan! Do you think the band adds any additional protection, or is it mostly the DEET doing the work?

I think it’s mostly the DEET. The band is more of a psychological comfort for me at this point. But hey, whatever works, right?

It seems like a mix of traditional methods and natural remedies might be the best way to go. I’m curious to try the essential oils.

Absolutely! I think I might order some essential oils today and see how they work before my next hike. Thanks for all the input, everyone!

Glad we could help! Just remember to check yourself for ticks after hikes, regardless of what repellent you use.
