Do Ultrasonic Squirrel Repellents Work?

Hey everyone!

I’ve been dealing with a persistent squirrel problem in my backyard, and I recently came across ultrasonic squirrel repellents. I’ve heard mixed reviews about their effectiveness, and I’m curious if anyone has had real success with them. Here’s what I’m wondering:

  1. What’s the science behind these devices?
  2. Have any of you tried them personally? What were your results?
  3. Are there better alternatives for keeping squirrels away?

If you’ve got any tips or experiences to share, I’d love to hear them! Thanks!

Hey ScienceBuffBen, I did some research a while back on ultrasonic devices. The idea is that they emit high-frequency sounds that are supposed to be irritating to pests but inaudible to humans. However, I’ve read that their effectiveness can vary based on the environment and the type of animals.

That makes sense, LindaWild. My brother used one of those devices and said it didn’t seem to bother the squirrels at all. But it did scare off the neighborhood cats! :joy:

purrfect_home, I think that’s a common issue. Many users report that while it might deter some animals, others seem to adapt. It really depends on the area and how used to disturbances the animals are.

I’ve been using ultrasonic repellents for about six months now, and I’d say they work somewhat. I’ve noticed fewer squirrels, but my garden still gets raided occasionally.

MousePatrol, what else are you doing to keep them away? Just curious if it’s a combination of methods that’s working.

Good question, MouseHater22! I’m all ears too, MousePatrol. If there are other methods that have helped, it might be worth trying them out!

I’ve found that natural repellents work better than ultrasonic ones. For example, I started using cayenne pepper around my plants, and it seems to do the trick!

That’s interesting, CaveDweller666! I’ve also heard that using predator urine can scare them off. Has anyone tried that?

I haven’t tried predator urine, LindaWild, but I’ve heard it can be effective if used properly. Just a bit gross, though!

I think it’s worth noting that ultrasonic repellents might work better in smaller spaces. If you have a large area, they might not provide full coverage.

That’s a good point, NightFlyer3! My backyard isn’t huge, but I wonder if my neighbor’s trees are attracting them too.

Maybe you could collaborate with your neighbor? If both of you use repellents, it might increase your success rate!

In my experience, combining methods can yield the best results. I’ve used both ultrasonic repellents and physical barriers like fencing, and I’ve seen a significant decrease in squirrel activity.

That sounds smart, MightyMouser! A multi-faceted approach seems like the way to go. How much did the fencing cost you?

Great advice, MightyMouser! I’ll definitely consider combining those methods. Thanks for sharing!
