Hey folks,
I’ve been dealing with a small rodent problem in my garage and I keep getting conflicting advice. Some people swear by rodent poisons, others say snap traps are way more effective and safer.
I’m trying to figure out what actually works better in real-world situations—not just what the packaging claims.
For me, snap traps were way more effective. At least I know when I caught something instead of wondering where a poisoned one wandered off to.
Same here. Poisons worked, but I hated the smell when a mouse died somewhere I couldn’t reach. Snap traps gave me more control.
Poisons can be strong, but they’re not magic. If the rodents have other food sources, they’ll ignore the bait entirely.
I’ve had decent results with poison blocks, but only when I cleaned up the area first. Otherwise, like @RailYardFinn said, they didn’t touch them.
Snap traps are quicker and more humane in my opinion. I’d rather deal with a quick catch than a poisoned mouse hiding behind drywall.
I’ve used both. Poisons were easier long-term, but snap traps gave me faster results when the infestation first started.
If you have pets, be extra careful. Even “tamper-resistant” bait stations aren’t totally foolproof. That’s why I mostly stick to traps.
@OldBarnWalker Exactly. I switched to snap traps after my dog tried to chew open a bait station. Never going back.

Poisons don’t really prevent anything. They’re just a control method. Closing entry points did way more for me than any bait.
I feel like poisons are overhyped. They work, yes, but traps + sealing holes kept my place rodent-free way longer than poison alone ever did.
