Hey everyone,
I’ve been seeing a ton of posts and videos claiming roaches absolutely hate certain smells — peppermint, eucalyptus, citrus peels, even coffee grounds. But honestly, I’m not sure what’s real anymore. Some folks say these scents keep roaches away, others say the bugs walk right over them like it’s nothing.
Peppermint oil gets hyped a lot, but in my place it only worked for a couple days. After that the roaches acted like it wasn’t even there.
I’ve tried citrus too. Smells great, but the roaches didn’t care at all. I think it mostly just makes us feel better.
From my experience, strong scents only push them around temporarily. They’ll avoid the area for a bit, then come right back once it fades.
They tend to dislike super strong essential oils, but it’s more irritation than “repellent.” It won’t stop them if there’s food or water nearby.
@DustyCountertops Same here. I even tried soaking cotton balls in citrus oil. Looked like a roach walked right over one just to prove a point.
What worked for me was using scents only in areas I wanted them to avoid, like under the bathroom sink. It didn’t get rid of them, but it changed where they traveled.
Tea tree oil seemed to slow them down for me. Not a miracle, but I noticed fewer around the baseboards when I used it consistently.
No scent beats crumbs, leaks, or cardboard boxes. If they’ve got food and moisture, they’ll tolerate basically anything.
Strong smells can interfere with how roaches communicate or follow trails, but it doesn’t “scare” them away. It’s more like you’re making their commute annoying.
I’d say scents are fine as a small helper, but not something to rely on. Good for maintenance, not for solving a real infestation.
