Do Essential Oils Do Anything for Pest Control or Is It All Hype?

Hey everyone,
I’ve been seeing a lot of posts and ads claiming that essential oils can help with pest problems — everything from ants to spiders to even mice. Some people swear by peppermint or eucalyptus, others say it’s all hype and doesn’t really do anything long-term.

So I’m wondering:
• Have any of you actually seen essential oils work for pests?
• Are they only good as a temporary deterrent?
• Do certain oils work better than others?
• Or is this whole thing more marketing than actual science?

Curious what the community thinks before I waste money on something that smells nice but doesn’t do much.

I’ve tried peppermint oil for spiders around my porch, and it worked for a few days. After that, the effect faded unless I reapplied constantly.

Same here, smells great but doesn’t last. I think people expect it to be a fix-all, but it’s more like a short-term barrier at best.

I use lemon eucalyptus around my windows. It doesn’t eliminate anything, but it does keep flies away for a bit. Good for when I’m expecting guests.

Honestly, oils never solved anything for me. Cleaning up food sources and sealing gaps did way more than any scent ever did.

There actually is some science behind certain oils, like citronella and cedarwood, but they evaporate fast. Unless you reapply every couple of days, they won’t do much.

Hey @HomeChemNerd, do you think mixing oils makes them stronger? I’ve seen some people combine peppermint + clove and swear it works better.

I tested a bunch of oils against ants in my garage last year. They avoided the scent for a little while, but once it faded they came right back through the same spots.

If you’re mainly trying to freshen up the house and slightly reduce pests, oils are fine. But for actual infestations, they’re not going to replace real solutions.

Put a few drops on cotton balls and toss them in closets. Helps keep the musty smell down and maybe discourages bugs a tiny bit. Nothing miraculous though.

I think essential oils are great for scent, just not so great for serious pest issues. Consider them a “bonus,” not a remedy.
