Do crickets go away in the winter?

Hello fellow members! I’m curious: do crickets vanish in the winter, or do they stick around? Let’s unravel this mystery together!

I think it’s more like they hibernate or die off when it gets cold. You don’t really hear them by the time it snows.

That’s partially correct. They actually enter a state called diapause, which is similar to hibernation. It slows their growth and development.

Yes, I have observed them, and they become very quiet in the winter

Interesting! I always thought they just died in the cold, but nature has its ways, doesn’t it?

Pretty sure some of them do die as not all of them find a good spot to hunker down for the cold months.

I read that the chirping of crickets is related to temperature. The colder it gets, the less they call until they stop altogether.

Yep, it’s all about the thermoregulation. Plus, most adult crickets don’t survive the winter. It’s their eggs that make it through until spring.

It’s their lifecycle. Crickets live for about a season, with new ones hatching when the weather warms up.
