Hey everyone,
I’ve been seeing ant trails popping up around my kitchen and backyard lately, and it got me wondering—do ant repellents actually work, or are we all just buying into clever marketing? There are sprays, powders, essential oils, granules… a whole aisle full of options.
But I’m not sure how many of them really make a difference once ants have already settled in.
Here are some things I’d love to hear your thoughts on:
-
Short-term results: Have you noticed any repellent that stops activity right away?
-
Long-term impact: Do repellents prevent them from coming back, or do they just reroute the trail for a day?
-
Natural methods vs. harsher stuff: Any clear winners?
-
Situational success: Do repellents work better indoors or outdoors?
Hoping we can clear up whether these things actually help, or if prevention and cleanup do more than any product ever could.
I’ve tried a few different repellents over the years, and honestly, they work best when the colony isn’t too established. Once the ants are really committed to an area, it feels more like a temporary speed bump than a solution.
For me, wiping down the counter with something strong-smelling actually did more than any store-bought repellent. It erased the scent trail, and the ants disappeared within an hour.
Repellents can help, but sealing the entry point always made the biggest difference. If you don’t block their doorways, they just find a way around whatever you put down.
@PorchPatrolPam Totally agree. Half the time the key is removing whatever scent markers they’ve left behind. They’re way more organized than people think.
Outdoors, I’ve had mixed results. Sometimes the repellents work for a day or two, then the ants come right back like nothing ever happened.
I’ve had good luck when I combine a repellent with deep cleaning. Ants aren’t here for fun, they’re here for crumbs. No crumbs = fewer visitors.
Some of the natural-smelling stuff actually works surprisingly well for a quick fix. It doesn’t solve the bigger issue, but it buys time.
Honestly, I think repellents do what they’re meant to do: push ants away from a specific area. They don’t eliminate anything, but they can redirect traffic pretty fast.
@DustyWorkshopDan I noticed the same. Not perfect, but good enough for a kitchen emergency when guests are coming over.
If you’re seeing them again and again, you probably need to check outside. I found a whole ant trail running under my siding. No repellent worked until I cut off that path.
