DIY squirrel removal — what actually works?

Hey everyone,

I’m dealing with squirrels that keep getting into our attic and yard, and I’m trying to figure out what DIY methods actually work. I’ve read about repellents, one-way doors, noise devices, and even homemade solutions, but the advice online is all over the place.

Before I spend money or make things worse, I’d like to hear from people who’ve tried handling squirrel problems themselves.

  • What methods actually worked long-term?

  • What was a complete waste of time?

  • At what point did you realize DIY wasn’t enough?

Any real-world experience would be appreciated.

One-way exclusion doors worked for me, but only after I sealed every other entry point first.

Repellents didn’t do much in my case. The squirrels avoided the area for a day or two, then came right back.

If they’re already nesting in the attic, DIY gets tricky fast. Noise and lights just annoyed them.

@RoofRunner Did you install the door yourself, or was it part of a kit?

Trapping can work, but local laws matter. Some areas don’t allow relocation, so check first.

@GardenFixer Same experience here. Sprays smell awful but didn’t solve the problem.

I thought I fixed it, then heard scratching again two weeks later. Turns out I missed a tiny roof gap.

For ground-level issues, DIY is doable. Once they’re in the attic or walls, professionals are usually worth it.

Metal flashing over entry points made the biggest difference for me. Chew-proof matters.

@DIYOrNot That’s kind of where I’m leaning now. Seems like prevention matters more than removal.
