Hey everyone!
I’ve been reading a lot about diatomaceous earth (DE) lately as a natural pest control method. Supposedly, it kills insects by drying them out — and it’s considered safe around humans and pets if you use the food-grade version.
I’m curious how well it actually works for preventative use, not just when you already have an infestation. For example:
-
Has anyone used it regularly around baseboards, garden beds, or entryways?
-
How often do you have to reapply it, especially in humid or rainy areas?
-
Does it actually keep things like ants, roaches, and spiders from coming inside?
-
And is it safe for use around dogs or small kids if applied carefully?
Would love to hear from anyone who’s tried it long-term — real experiences, both good and bad.
I sprinkle DE along the baseboards and under appliances every couple of months. It definitely helps keep ants and roaches down. The trick is to apply a very thin layer, if it looks like snow, you used too much.
I’ve used it outdoors around the foundation. Works great for ants, not so much for flying insects. You do have to reapply after rain, though, because it stops working once it gets wet.
I’m a big DE fan. Totally natural, no chemicals, and I’ve used it safely around my cat for years. Just don’t breathe it in, wear a mask when applying. It’s not toxic, but the fine dust can irritate your lungs.
I used DE to deal with silverfish in my basement. It didn’t kill them instantly, but after a week or two, they were gone. I still apply a bit every few months just for maintenance.
DE saved my garden! I had a terrible earwig problem. Lightly dusted it around my veggies, and within days the population dropped. You do have to reapply often outdoors, but it’s totally worth it.
I’ll be honest, it’s hit or miss. Works great for crawling bugs that walk through it, but it won’t stop infestations by itself. I still combine it with bait traps and seal up cracks.
Mix DE with a little boric acid if you’re not worried about pets, makes it even more effective. But if you’ve got pets or kids, stick with plain food-grade DE.
One thing people forget — DE loses effectiveness if it clumps from humidity. I keep a bottle of it with a shaker top and re-dust every few weeks, especially near windowsills.
I use DE behind the stove and under the sink, where the kids and dog can’t reach. Totally chemical-free, and no bugs in sight for months. Love it.
It’s a great preventative if used correctly. Think of it as a dry barrier, not a kill-on-contact product. Consistency is key — once it’s wiped or washed away, it’s useless.
