Lately, I’ve been spotting a few centipedes in my basement and even one in the bathroom last night . I know they’re fast and creepy, but I’ve also heard they might actually be helpful because they eat other bugs.
Still, I’m not thrilled about sharing space with them. Are centipedes dangerous at all? And what’s the best way to keep them out of the house for good — without going overboard?
I used to freak out every time I saw one, but turns out they’re not really dangerous. They don’t bite unless cornered, and even then it’s super rare. Honestly, I started seeing fewer roaches once centipedes showed up, they kind of did the dirty work for me.
Same here. They creep me out, but they actually help with spiders and silverfish. If you don’t want them inside, try sealing up cracks around baseboards and using a dehumidifier. They love damp spots.
@HouseHarmony1 That’s exactly what happened to me! After I got a dehumidifier, I haven’t seen one since. They seem to come out when the humidity rises.
They’re kind of like accidental pest control. If you can tolerate a few, they’ll keep other bugs in check. But if it’s becoming a real invasion, sticky traps near corners work well without harsh chemicals.
Caught one crawling across my wall at 2 a.m. last week. Nearly gave me a heart attack . I sealed every vent and gap I could find the next day. Haven’t seen any since.
@NightWatcher I totally get that, they move way too fast! I think they’re harmless, but it’s still unsettling. Regular vacuuming and reducing clutter helped me a ton.
Centipedes are usually a symptom, not the main problem. If you’ve got them, it means other small bugs are around. Take care of those first and the centipedes will move on.
Great thread. I used to squash them on sight, but now I just guide them outside. Once you understand their role, they’re not as scary, just unexpected roommates with too many legs.
