Carpet beetles took over a bedroom… how do you nuke them for good?

Hey folks,

I’m honestly at my wits’ end here. One bedroom in my house has been completely taken over by carpet beetles—larvae in the carpet, adults near the windows, and mystery holes showing up in fabric. I’ve vacuumed nonstop, washed everything I can, and even pulled furniture away from the walls, but they keep coming back.

I’m trying to figure out what actually works long-term and what’s just a temporary fix. A few things I’m hoping to hear from others:

  • What finally stopped them for you?

  • Is it more about cleaning, treatment, or finding the hidden source?

  • How long did it realistically take before things felt “normal” again?

Any advice or real-world experience would be appreciated.

Been there, unfortunately. For me the big turning point was realizing they weren’t living in the carpet so much as feeding on stuff under the bed and in the closet. Old blankets and a wool rug were basically a buffet.

I had a similar issue and daily vacuuming actually mattered, especially along baseboards and under furniture. Not fun, but after a few weeks the numbers dropped fast. Miss one area though and they bounce right back.

Not sure if this helps, but check air vents and the edges of closets. I kept finding larvae where dust and pet hair collected. Once I cleaned those spots regularly, things improved.

Are you seeing more larvae or adults? In my case, adults near the window meant there was still a hidden food source somewhere. Took me forever to find a box of old sweaters I forgot about.

If you have pets, that can make it worse. Hair buildup under beds and dressers was a huge factor for me. I didn’t even realize how much was down there until I moved everything.

I agree with what others said about source removal. Treatments helped a little, but nothing stuck until the infested items were gone. Once those were out, it became way more manageable.

@VacuumAddict Totally agree on consistency. I skipped a week thinking things were under control and immediately saw larvae again. Learned the hard way that you can’t ease up too soon.

One thing people don’t mention enough is time. It took about two months before I stopped seeing them completely. Progress wasn’t linear either, I’d think they were gone, then see one more.

I had success combining deep cleaning with sealing cracks and gaps along the floor. Might not be the main cause, but it helped reduce reinfestation from other parts of the house.
