Carpet beetles in my car — how serious is this?

Hey everyone,

I noticed a few small carpet beetles in my car over the past couple of weeks, mostly near the seats and floor mats. I keep my car pretty clean, so this caught me off guard. I’m not sure if this is just a minor nuisance or something I should act on quickly.

I had this happen once. In my case it wasn’t serious, but ignoring it made it worse. They were feeding on crumbs and pet hair trapped under the seats.

They won’t damage the car mechanically, but they can mess with fabric if larvae stick around. Vacuuming thoroughly helped me a lot.

Check the trunk too. That’s where mine were hiding. Old blankets and reusable bags were the main problem.

I wouldn’t panic, but I also wouldn’t ignore it. Carpet beetles usually mean there’s some organic material they like.

@NoMoreSurprises The adults are annoying, but it’s the larvae you really want to eliminate. Deep cleaning breaks their life cycle.

Steam cleaning the seats worked better for me than sprays. No smell, no residue, and it actually killed what was hidden.

I used diatomaceous earth lightly under the floor mats after vacuuming. Messy if overused, but effective if applied carefully.

@SolarQueen Good point about fabrics. I had minor seat damage because I waited too long and assumed they were harmless.

Moisture matters too. Once I started keeping the car dry and aired out, they stopped showing up.

If they keep returning, they might be coming from your garage or driveway area. Treating just the car didn’t fully solve it for me.
