Can someone help me ID this bug?

Hi everyone,

I recently found a small bug in my house and I’m trying to figure out what it is before I start treating the problem the wrong way. It’s pretty small, dark-colored, and I’ve mostly seen it near the baseboards and once in the kitchen area. I only noticed a few so far, but I’d rather catch the issue early if it’s something that could turn into a bigger problem.

I wasn’t able to get a super clear photo, which makes it harder to identify. At first I thought it might be a beetle of some kind, but I’m not sure. It didn’t seem to move very fast, just slowly crawling along the wall.

Has anyone had a similar situation where they weren’t sure what the bug was at first? What signs helped you figure it out?

Could be a carpet beetle if you’re seeing them near baseboards.

I was thinking the same thing. Carpet beetles are pretty common indoors.

@ConnorReid Do they usually move slowly? That’s how the ones I saw acted.

Sometimes they do, especially the adults.

If you start seeing tiny larvae nearby, that’s another clue.

Check closets or areas with fabrics too.

@NoraLane Good point. I found some near stored blankets once.

It could also be a small pantry beetle depending on where it showed up.

A clear photo usually helps narrow it down a lot.

If more start appearing, you’ll probably be able to identify it easier.
