Hey everyone!
I’m looking for some insight into whether or not rats can detect human scent on traps. I’ve been trying to get rid of a small infestation in my garage, and I’ve read that the way we handle traps can affect their effectiveness.
From what I understand, rats have a keen sense of smell and can pick up on scents from quite a distance. But I’m curious if they can associate the human scent with danger and be less likely to approach the traps.
That’s a great question, @UrbanRodentControl! From what I’ve read and experienced, rats can definitely pick up on human scent. They’re very cautious creatures.
I agree with RatWhisperer. Human scent can make them more wary. I usually wear gloves when handling traps to avoid leaving my scent.
Good point, @Pestologist! How effective do you find using gloves? Do you think it really makes a difference?
Yes! I’ve seen better results when I use gloves. I also try to set traps in areas where they frequently travel, which helps too.
Just to add, I think the type of bait matters. If you’re using something with a strong smell, like peanut butter or bacon, it might mask any human scent.
True, @BackyardBaiter! Scent plays a huge role in attracting rats. I’d definitely recommend trying different baits to see which one works best in your area.
That makes sense! I’ve heard peanut butter is a favorite. Has anyone had success with anything else?
I’ve had luck with sunflower seeds too! They’re also less messy than some other baits.
It’s fascinating how sensitive rats are to scents. They can detect pheromones and other chemical signals. I wonder if there’s a way to use that to our advantage?
That’s an interesting idea! Perhaps using specific scents or pheromones that attract rats could help lure them in despite any human scent?
That’s a neat thought! Has anyone tried combining scents or using essential oils to attract them?
Just throwing it out there: instead of focusing on scents, maybe consider traps that have a less human touch to them. There are some traps designed for minimal contact.
I haven’t seen those, @EcoWarrior1. Can you recommend any specific brands or styles?
Definitely! I’ve had success with the traps. They’re easy to set without touching much.
Thanks for all the input, everyone! I think I’ll try using gloves and test different bait options. I’ll keep you posted on what works!
