Hey everyone!
I wanted to open up a discussion on a rat trap design I’ve been tinkering with lately—the 5-gallon bucket trap often referred to as the “Stairway to Heaven.” For those who may not know, this design utilizes a bucket filled with water and a ramp leading up to the edge, which causes the rats to slip in and drown.
Hey @MousePatrol! I’ve used a bucket trap before, and it worked pretty well. I added a spinning PVC pipe that spins when the rats try to get to the bait. They can’t get a grip and end up in the bucket. Have you thought about any additional features?
That sounds awesome, CritterCatcher85!
I was thinking about adding some sort of bait holder that releases food gradually. Do you think that would work?
Hey everyone!
I’m not a fan of drowning traps. Have you considered humane traps? They can catch the rats without harming them, and then you can release them elsewhere. What do you all think?
I appreciate the humane angle, @NatureLover23. However, I’ve had issues with releasing rats in unfamiliar areas, as they often find their way back. What’s your take on that?
That’s a valid concern, @MousePatrol. Maybe researching local guidelines on wildlife relocation could help? Some areas have strict rules about releasing animals.
I’ve been experimenting with a slightly different design. I turned the bucket upside down and used a larger container underneath. The idea is to catch them without water. Has anyone else tried this method?
Interesting idea, DIYDude56!
How does it work in terms of ensuring the rats can’t escape? I worry they might find a way out if it’s not deep enough.
I think the bucket trap is great for large infestations. However, I’ve noticed that it can attract more rats if not managed properly. What’s your take on maintaining cleanliness around traps?
That’s a great point, @UrbanGardener99. Keeping the area clean can lessen the attraction for new rats. Have you all thought about bait placement and its role in cleanliness?
I’ve considered that, and I plan to place bait only during active times to reduce leftover food. What do you all think is the best time to bait?
I love the idea of improving the bucket trap! I’ve had a few ideas, like adding a cover to keep out non-target animals. What are your thoughts on that?
A cover could help, @ScoutGirl88, but it might deter the rats too. Maybe a removable one that lets in small animals but keeps out larger ones?
Great suggestion! Maybe we can brainstorm materials that are both lightweight and sturdy. I’ll look into some options!
