Bird mites — if they can’t live on humans, why am I still getting bit?

Hey everyone,

I recently discovered what looks like bird mites in my home, probably coming from a nest near the roof or vents outside. What confuses me is that everything I read says bird mites can’t live on humans long-term, yet I’m still getting bites and feeling like they’re around.

I’ve already checked bedding, cleaned a lot of areas, and tried to locate where they might be coming from, but it’s still frustrating. From what I understand, once the birds leave a nest, the mites start looking for other hosts and sometimes end up inside houses.

Has anyone here dealt with this before? How long did it take before things actually improved after removing the source?

Bird mites can still bite humans while searching for a host, even if they can’t live on us.

I had this happen when birds nested in my attic vent.

@EmmaClarke Same here. Once the nest was removed, the problem slowly faded.

Did you check window AC units or roof edges? That’s a common entry point.

In my case they were coming from a nest above a window frame.

Cleaning helped, but removing the nest was the real solution.

@NoraLane Exactly. Until the source is gone they keep showing up.

I also washed bedding and vacuumed daily for a while.

Some people seal small gaps after removing the nest to prevent re-entry.

From what I’ve heard, once the nest is gone the mites usually disappear within a couple of weeks.
