Hey everyone,
I’ve managed to reduce a carpet beetle issue in my home after a lot of cleaning and organizing, but now I’m worried about them coming back.
It feels like getting rid of them once is one thing — but keeping them from returning is a whole different challenge.
So I’m trying to figure out what actually works long-term:
-
Is it mostly about ongoing cleaning habits?
-
Or is it more about removing specific sources permanently?
-
Are there preventative steps that really make a difference?
For those who’ve successfully kept them from coming back, what did you do differently after the initial cleanup?

For me it was all about sealing cleaned items. I used airtight bins for anything fabric-related.
Regular vacuuming helps, but it’s not enough on its own.
@LintBarrierTheo agree. Cleaning reduces numbers, but doesn’t stop them from returning.
I focused on closets and under-bed storage. That’s where mine kept coming back from.
Removing the source completely made the biggest difference for me.
@CleanLoopHarper did you identify where they originally came from? That’s key.
I started rotating and checking stored clothes more often, which helped a lot.
Don’t forget baseboards and carpet edges — easy to miss and they hide there.
I also made sure windows had proper screens to reduce them coming in from outside.
It’s really about consistency. Once I stayed on top of it, they didn’t return.
In my experience, regular vacuuming and removing hidden lint, pet hair and old fabrics makes the biggest difference long-term. Carpet beetles seem to come back when they still have a food source somewhere. I do also check closets, under furniture and vents because they like hidden spots. Keeping things clean consistently really helps prevent another infestation.
