Best Rodent Control Methods That Worked Long Term

Hi everyone,

I’ve tried a bunch of different rodent control methods over the years, and honestly a lot of them only seemed to work temporarily. Traps would help for a while, then a few months later the scratching in the walls or droppings would start again.

At this point I’m less interested in “quick fixes” and more interested in what actually works long term.

So for people who finally got rodents under control:

  • What made the biggest difference?

  • Was it more about sealing entry points, trap setup, sanitation, or something else?

  • Which methods completely failed for you?

Curious what genuinely worked over time instead of just reducing activity for a few weeks.

Sealing entry points ended up being more important than the traps themselves for me.

Same. I kept trapping mice but they always came back until I found where they were getting in.

I had better results once I started placing traps directly along travel paths instead of random corners.

@BaitStationCole Wall placement changed everything for me too.

Food storage matters a lot more than people think. Pet food was attracting mine constantly.

I wasted money on ultrasonic devices and honestly saw almost no difference.

@SteelTrapMiles did you ever check the garage door edges? That turned out to be my main problem area.

For long-term control it really took a combination of sealing + trapping + regular monitoring.

I switched to enclosed traps after snap traps kept failing in my basement.

The biggest mistake I made was stopping too early once activity slowed down.
