Hey everyone!
I recently found some phorid flies buzzing around my kitchen, and I’ve been doing some research on how to get rid of them. Phorid flies, sometimes called humpbacked flies, are small and can be a real nuisance once they invade your home.
These flies are attracted to decaying organic matter, so they often thrive in places like garbage disposals, compost bins, and even under appliances where food particles can accumulate. I’ve read that they can be tough to eliminate, so I’m looking for effective strategies.
I feel your pain, @GreenThumbGal! Phorid flies can be really annoying. I had a similar issue last summer. One thing I found really helpful was cleaning out my garbage disposal thoroughly. I used ice cubes and vinegar to scrub it out, and it worked wonders!
Great tip, @BugBuster! I also recommend checking under your fridge and stove. I found a ton of old crumbs there, and once I cleaned that up, the flies decreased significantly.
Awesome suggestions! I’ll definitely check under the appliances. Do you think leaving out apple cider vinegar traps can help, too?
Absolutely! I used a bowl of apple cider vinegar with a drop of dish soap. It attracted the flies, and the soap helps trap them. Make sure to replace it often for the best results!
I had phorid flies in my house last year. I found that sealing all food items tightly really helped. I switched to airtight containers for my pantry goods, and it made a huge difference!
Thanks for sharing, @ScienceBuffBen! I’ve been meaning to buy some containers. Did you notice any flies after you sealed everything up?
Not really! It’s like they lost their food source. Just make sure to keep the counters clean, too, or they might find other spots to hang out.
I’ve read that using diatomaceous earth can help with pest control, including phorid flies. It’s a more natural approach, and it might help eliminate any larvae hiding in your home.
Diatomaceous earth sounds interesting! How do you apply it? Can it be used in kitchens safely?
You can sprinkle it in areas where you see flies, but make sure to keep it away from food prep surfaces. I used it near the garbage bin and under the sink, and it worked really well.
I think prevention is key! Regularly taking out the trash and keeping the kitchen clean can really help. I also use essential oils like peppermint and lavender around the house as a deterrent.
I love the idea of using essential oils! Do you just place them around, or do you dilute them somehow?
I usually dilute a few drops in water and spray it in the kitchen. It smells great, and it seems to keep the flies away!
In my experience, trapping is very effective. You can make a DIY trap with a plastic bottle and sugar water. It’s simple and works like a charm!
That’s a cool idea, @HomeHelper! How do you set it up?
You just cut the top off a plastic bottle, invert it into the bottom part, and fill it with sugar water. The flies get in and can’t escape!
