Best Bait to Catch a Mouse: What Works?

Hey everyone!

I’ve been dealing with a bit of a mouse problem in my garage, and I’m looking for some advice on the best bait to use for my traps. I’ve heard different opinions on what works best, so I wanted to start a discussion and gather some insights!

Hey EcoWarrior! I’ve had a lot of success with peanut butter. It’s sticky, which keeps them at the trap longer, and they absolutely love it. Have you tried that yet?

I haven’t tried peanut butter yet! I was worried it might be too messy. Does it really work better than cheese?

Totally! Cheese can just get nibbled away too easily. Peanut butter sticks, so they have to work harder for it. Plus, it’s easy to spread on traps.

Great thread! I’ve heard dried fruit can be effective too. Especially if you’re dealing with fruit-loving mice. Have any of you tried that?

I haven’t, but that’s interesting! Do you think it would work on the basic snap traps, or more for the catch-and-release kinds?

It might work better for catch-and-release traps since it’s less likely to be eaten quickly. But it could attract them to the snap traps too if they’re hungry enough!

I’ve had success with a mix! A little peanut butter and a small piece of chocolate together. They can’t resist it!

That sounds like a winning combo! Do you place them side by side or mix them together?

I would mix them; just make sure the chocolate is in small bits so they don’t take it and run. You want them to stay at the trap!

Important point about safety! If you have pets, be careful with bait placement. Peanut butter is great, but my dog can’t resist it, so I have to think creatively.

Good call! Maybe try placing the traps where pets can’t reach, or use bait that is less attractive to them?

Exactly! I’ve used sunflower seeds, which my dog doesn’t care about. It can sometimes work for mice too!

I’ve read that commercial baits can sometimes be effective, but I prefer natural options. They’re usually cheaper and safer. Have any of you tried store-bought bait?

I’ve tried some, but I always go back to the classics like peanut butter. It’s just so much easier to get!

Totally understandable. I just find that using what’s already at home is more practical, especially in a pinch!
