Best Bait for Rat Traps - What Works Best?

Hey everyone!
I’ve recently been dealing with a rat problem in my garage and I’m looking for the best ways to bait my traps effectively. I’ve heard different opinions on what foods work best, but I’m curious to hear everyone’s experiences.

From peanut butter to bacon, people seem to have their preferences when it comes to baiting rat traps. I’ve found that some things work better than others, and I’d love to compile a list of the most effective baits to help others facing similar issues.

Hey @HomeHelper! I’ve had a lot of success using peanut butter. It’s sticky, so it stays on the trap longer, and rats can’t resist it!

Absolutely, purrfect_home! I’ve also had great results with peanut butter. But I mix in some oats too for added texture. It seems to attract them even more!

I read somewhere that bacon is a top bait choice because of its strong smell. Have you guys tried that?

I have not tried bacon! I’ll have to give that a shot. Do you cook it first or just use it raw?

Cooked bacon works wonders! The smell wafts around, drawing them in. Just be careful it doesn’t spoil if you’re setting traps for a while.

I’ve had moderate success with sunflower seeds. They’re a bit harder to get, but rats love them. Plus, they can take a while to eat, which gives the trap time to activate.

That’s interesting, @MouseHater22! Do you just scatter them near the trap or place them in it?

I think placing them in the trap works better. It gives them more incentive to go for it!

I’ve also found that using a combination of different foods works best. A little bit of cheese along with peanut butter can create a really enticing bait.

That makes sense! Mixing it up could keep them guessing and more interested. What types of cheese do you prefer?

I usually just use sharp cheddar. It has a strong smell that really attracts them!

While I appreciate the discussions on bait, let’s also consider humane traps or methods. What are your thoughts on that approach?

Great point, @SkepticalSue! If we can avoid killing them, that’s even better. What bait do you recommend for humane traps?

Fruits like apples or even berries could work well in humane traps since they’re sweet and delicious for rats.
