Hey everyone,
I recently found signs of what looks like a bed bug infestation — small bites, a few dark spots on the mattress seams, and one actual bug that I managed to catch. Not a great situation.
The problem is, I really don’t want to throw away my mattress if I can avoid it. It’s still in good condition otherwise, and replacing it would be expensive. I’ve read mixed opinions online — some people say you can save it with proper treatment, others say it’s not worth the risk.
Has anyone successfully dealt with this and kept their mattress? What steps did you take, and did it actually work long-term?
It’s possible, but you have to be very thorough. Mattress encasements helped a lot in my case.
Heat treatment is usually the most effective method if you’re trying to keep furniture.
I kept mine, but only after deep cleaning and using an encasement for several months.
@CleanLivingMia same here. The encasement basically traps anything inside so they can’t spread.
You also need to treat the entire room, not just the mattress.
I made the mistake of only focusing on the bed and they came back a few weeks later.
@NightCheckAaron 100% agree. They hide in bed frames, baseboards, even nearby furniture.
Washing everything on high heat made a big difference for me.
If the infestation is heavy, some people still choose to replace just for peace of mind.
It can be saved, but it takes consistency and patience to fully get rid of them.
