Balancing Pest Control and Pet Safety: How Do You Manage Both?

Hey pet parents!
Last month, I tried a peppermint oil spray to deter mice—only to find my cat, Whiskers, sneezing nonstop. Turns out, even “natural” solutions can backfire with pets! After some trial and error, I’ve switched to food-grade diatomaceous earth for ants (safe for pets once settled) and pet-safe ultrasonic repellents for rodents. Still, I’m paranoid about flea treatments and rat poison.

Diatomaceous earth saved my sanity with fleas! But I learned the hard way: ONLY use food-grade and keep pets away until it settles. My dog started itching like crazy when I applied it too thick.

@SafePawsOnly Same here! I mix DE with baking soda for carpet pests. For ants, cinnamon sticks near doors—safe and smells great. Avoid borax if you’ve got pets, toxic if ingested!

Essential oils (tea tree, eucalyptus) are TOXIC to cats! Use cedarwood instead for fleas. Also, avoid mothballs, they’re lethal to pets.

I used citrus peels for roaches… until my rabbit ate one and got diarrhea. Now I stick to vinegar sprays and sealed containers. Lesson learned!

Prevention is key! Seal cracks with steel wool (mice hate it) and use pet-safe bait stations for rodents. Keep traps in locked cabinets.

My cats are MENACES, they batted a live mouse into my bed last week. Now I use humane traps and release critters FAR away. Any other cat owners relate?

Help! My dog keeps digging up ant hills. I’m scared to use pesticides. Any non-toxic ant killers safe for pups?

@MouseHater22 Try a soap-water-vinegar spray! Kills ants on contact and harmless once dry. Also, sprinkle coffee grounds—they hate the smell.

@HomeHelperHank Steel wool works wonders! Just wear gloves, I got a nasty splinter last time.

@DryDogDude My cat brought a live squirrel inside once. Now I keep screens on all windows.
