Are these termite droppings or something else?

Hi all,
I noticed a small pile of tiny pellet-like debris near the baseboard in one of my rooms, and now I’m getting nervous. They look almost like grains of sand or sawdust, but they keep reappearing even after I clean them up.

I’ve read a bit online and saw photos of termite droppings that look similar, but I don’t want to jump to conclusions.

Has anyone dealt with this before?

  • How can you tell if it’s termite frass versus something else?
  • Do other pests leave similar-looking droppings?
  • At what point should this be considered urgent?

Any insight would really help.

Those little uniform pellets are usually what gets people worried about termites. Size and shape matter a lot here, termite frass tends to look very consistent.

Location is a big clue too. If it’s piling up below wood trim or window frames, that leans more toward termites than general debris.

I had something similar once, but it turned out to be carpenter ants pushing debris out of a wall void. @purrfect_home, are the pellets all the same color or mixed?

Termite droppings usually feel hard, almost like tiny seeds. If you crush them and they turn to dust easily, it might be something else.

Also worth checking if there are tiny kick-out holes in the wood nearby. That’s often how frass ends up in neat little piles.

I’d be cautious either way. When I ignored a small pile thinking it was dust, it ended up being drywood termites months later.

One thing people forget is moisture. If the area is dry and elevated, termites become more likely than other pests.

If you clean it and it comes back in the exact same spot within a day or two, that’s usually not random debris.

@SafePawsOnly Makes a good point — ants and termites can look similar at first glance, but ants usually leave less uniform material.

Either way, recurring piles are your signal to investigate further. Waiting rarely makes these situations simpler or cheaper.
