Anyone ever dealt with black pepper bird / tropical rodents? What worked?

Hi everyone,

I’m dealing with what locals call “black pepper birds” along with some small tropical rodents around my property, and it’s turning into a real headache. They’re getting into stored goods, chewing packaging, and showing up way more often than I expected.

I’ve tried basic deterrents and cleanup, but they keep coming back. I’m curious what’s actually worked for others who’ve dealt with these kinds of pests in warm or tropical areas. Did you go DIY, traps, exclusion, or call in professionals? Any insight would help.

Yeah, they’re super common where I live. They’re smart and learn fast if something isn’t a real threat.

Rodents aside, those birds are brutal on crops. Netting helped us more than scare tactics.

What finally worked was removing food sources and sealing storage tight. Half measures didn’t do much.

@SpiceFarmTrouble When you say tropical rodents, are they more roof-rat sized or smaller mice? That matters a lot for control.

We tried sound deterrents for the birds. Worked for about a week, then they ignored it completely.

Honestly, improving storage was step one. Metal bins with tight lids made a noticeable difference.

Traps helped reduce numbers, but sealing entry points is what stopped the cycle.

Same issue here. Poison wasn’t worth the risk with birds around, so we avoided it entirely.

@LocalFarmerJoe Agreed. Predators and pets make poison a bad idea in tropical areas.

It took time, but a combo of exclusion, habitat cleanup, and patience eventually paid off. There’s no instant fix with these guys.
