Woke up covered in bites… how do I confirm bed bugs?

Morning all,

I’m hoping I’m overreacting, but I woke up today with multiple itchy bites across my arms and shoulders, and now my anxiety is through the roof. I didn’t notice anything crawling, but the pattern feels… suspicious.

Before I jump straight to worst-case scenarios, I want to know how people actually confirm bed bugs versus other possibilities. I’m especially curious about:

  • What signs are considered strong indicators

  • Where to look first in a bedroom

  • How quickly people usually spot physical evidence

Would really appreciate advice from anyone who’s been through this.

First thing I’d do is inspect mattress seams and the corners of the bed frame with a flashlight.

Bite patterns alone aren’t reliable. I thought I had them once and it ended up being something else entirely.

Don’t skip the headboard. That’s where we finally found evidence after checking everything else.

Look for tiny dark spots on sheets or mattress fabric. That was the first sign in my case.

@LateNightScratcher That’s what I’m hoping, the bites showed up overnight but I know that doesn’t prove much.

@CheckTheSeams agreed. Seams and screw holes are usually more telling than open surfaces.

If you don’t find anything after a thorough check, give it a few nights before panicking. One morning of bites doesn’t always mean infestation.

Also check luggage or clothes if you’ve traveled recently. That’s how they hitchhike in.

@FrameAndHeadboard People underestimate how well they hide in wood joints.

Careful inspection beats guessing. Once you know what you’re dealing with, decisions get much easier.
