What Smell Do Rats Hate?

Hey everyone!
I’ve been doing some research on how to keep rats away from my garden and home without using harmful traps or poisons. I came across some interesting information suggesting that certain smells can repel rats.

From my understanding, rats are particularly sensitive to certain scents. I’ve read that they dislike the smell of peppermint, ammonia, and even vinegar. However, I’m curious if anyone has personal experiences or additional insights on this topic.

I’ve actually used peppermint oil around my garden, and it definitely seems to help! I mixed it with some water and sprayed it around the perimeter. I haven’t seen any signs of rats since then.

That’s great to hear, @EarthFriendlyTom! I’ve read that using cotton balls soaked in peppermint oil can also work. Have you tried that method?

Not yet, but I’ll definitely give it a shot. I might even put some in my shed. Do you think it works just as well?

I’ve heard that it works wonders, especially in enclosed spaces. Just make sure to refresh them every week or so!

I’ve had an issue with rats in my apartment, and I’ve read that ammonia is effective. I tried soaking rags in ammonia and placing them near entry points. It was really strong, but it seemed to deter them.

I’ve heard about that method too, but it sounds a bit harsh. Did it have any lingering odors in your apartment?

Yes, it did smell quite strong for a few days. I had to ventilate my place well. But it was worth it for the peace of mind!

Has anyone tried using vinegar? I know it’s a strong smell and some suggest it can repel rats. I tried it in my kitchen, but I’m not sure if it was effective.

I’ve read mixed reviews about vinegar. Some claim it works, while others say it doesn’t. Maybe it depends on how strong the scent is?

That makes sense. I used it straight, but I might try it mixed with water next time. It would be great if it works because it’s so easy to access!

If you’re looking for a more proactive approach, have you thought about planting certain herbs? Plants like lavender or sage are said to keep rats away.

That’s a good idea! I love planting herbs anyway. Any recommendations on where to plant them for the best effect?

Planting them around the perimeter of your garden or near entry points can be really effective. Plus, they look great and could attract beneficial insects!

I worry about my pet if I use strong smells like ammonia. Are there any safer, natural options?

Great question, @MouseHater22! I think the essential oils and herbs can be safer options. Just ensure they’re in places where your pet can’t get to them.

Thanks for the tip! I’ll stick with peppermint and herbs then.
