Thousands of gnats swarming my house — what on earth is attracting them?

Hi all,

Hoping someone here has dealt with this before. Over the past week, my house has been absolutely swarmed by tiny gnats — windows, lights, even the bathroom. I don’t recall changing anything major, but the numbers are honestly shocking.

I’m trying to figure out what’s pulling them in so suddenly. Could be something indoors, could be outside conditions, or maybe both. I’d really like to understand:

  • Common things that attract large gnat populations

  • Whether this usually starts indoors or outside

  • And if there’s a practical way to reduce them without it turning into a constant battle

Any real-world experiences would help.

First thing I’d check is moisture. Gnats love damp soil, drains, and anything slightly stagnant.

We had clouds of them once and it turned out a porch light was basically inviting them every night.

@WindowWatcher Interesting, we do leave exterior lights on pretty late, never thought that could matter this much.

Houseplants are a huge culprit. Overwatered pots can become breeding grounds fast.

Don’t forget sink and floor drains. Bio buildup is like a buffet for gnats.

This tends to spike with warm, humid weather. Sometimes it’s less about your house and more about conditions lining up.

@PlantParent88 Seconding this, once I changed watering habits, numbers dropped noticeably within days.

In my old place it was trash cans. Even if they’re emptied, residue can keep attracting them.

I’ve learned that killing adults doesn’t solve much if the source stays active.

Finding what’s feeding them is the real fix. Once that’s gone, they usually disappear on their own.
