That Dead Mouse Smell That Won't Go Away – What Should I Do?

Hey everyone,

A few weeks ago I had a mouse problem and managed to get rid of the activity, but now I’m dealing with something almost worse — the smell.

There’s a strong odor coming from somewhere in the house, and I’m pretty sure a mouse died inside a wall, ceiling, or some other inaccessible spot. I’ve cleaned everything I can reach, but the smell just keeps lingering.

A few things I’m wondering:

  • How long does a dead mouse smell usually last?

  • Is there any way to speed up the process?

  • Did anyone actually find the source, or did you just wait it out?

At this point, the smell is driving everyone in the house crazy, so I’d appreciate any advice.

Unfortunately, I had to deal with this last year. The smell lasted about two weeks before it started fading.

If you can locate the exact spot, removing the source is definitely the fastest solution.

Mine was in a wall cavity. We never found it, but the odor gradually disappeared after a few weeks.

@RusticHomeBrandon same experience. Once we removed it, the smell was gone within a day or two.

Air purifiers and ventilation helped make it more tolerable while we waited.

I thought the smell was coming from the kitchen, but it turned out to be near a utility closet.

@CedarHillJake have you noticed whether the smell is stronger at certain times of the day? That helped me narrow down the location.

We used odor-absorbing charcoal bags in the area and they seemed to help a little.

If it’s inside a ceiling or wall, sometimes waiting it out is the only realistic option unless you want to open things up.

The hardest part is finding the source. Once you know where it’s coming from, the decision becomes much easier.
