Hey everyone!
I’m hoping someone here can help me understand what I’m dealing with. Lately I’ve been seeing large, dark brown roaches around my home, mostly near doors, windows, and sometimes in the garage. From what I’ve looked up, they seem like smoky brown roaches.
What’s confusing is that I don’t see many inside the kitchen like German roaches—most of them show up near entry points or after heavy rain. I’m worried they might eventually make their way deeper into the house.
Are smoky brown roaches mostly an outdoor problem, or should I be treating this like a full indoor infestation? Any advice or personal experience would really help.
Smoky brown roaches are usually outdoor roaches. They like moisture and are often attracted to lights near doors and windows.
I see them a lot near my porch and garage. Once I reduced outdoor lighting at night, sightings dropped noticeably.
They don’t usually infest kitchens the way German roaches do, but they will come inside if conditions are right.
@DIYDude56 That’s reassuring. Most of mine are definitely near entrances, not food areas.
Sealing gaps and fixing moisture issues helps a lot. They’re big on damp environments, especially after rain.
One thing to check is leaf litter and mulch near the foundation. That’s a common nesting area for smoky browns.
@UrbanGardener77 Same experience here. Porch lights were basically inviting them in.
I treated the exterior perimeter instead of spraying inside, and that made a huge difference.
If you’re renting, it’s worth letting management know. Exterior treatments are often their responsibility.
They’re unpleasant but manageable. Focus on outdoor control, moisture reduction, and sealing entry points before going aggressive indoors.
