Hi everyone,
I recently discovered that one room in my house has a pretty bad carpet beetle problem. I started noticing tiny larvae near the baseboards, then damage on an old rug and some stored clothing. Now that I know what they are, I’m seeing them way more than I’d like.
I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed and not sure what the first step should be.
Do I start with deep cleaning? Insecticides? Throwing things out?
If you’ve dealt with carpet beetles before, I’d really appreciate some guidance on where to begin and what actually made a difference.
I’d isolate the room if possible. Stop moving fabrics in and out until you know what’s infested, otherwise they spread fast.
@QuietCornerHome Don’t underestimate laundry. Anything washable from that room should go through hot wash + hot dry. That alone made a big dent for me.
First thing: vacuum. Everywhere. Carpet edges, closets, under furniture. It won’t solve everything, but it immediately reduces larvae and eggs.
Check why they’re there. Carpet beetles feed on natural fibers, pet hair, dust, even dead insects. Cleaning the food source matters more than spraying.
I tried sprays first and regretted it. Cleaning and sealing cracks helped way more. Chemicals helped later, but not as step one.
If you have old rugs, stored wool clothes, or unused blankets in that room, inspect them closely. I ended up tossing two items that were ground zero.
@OldHouseNotes Agree 100%. I skipped laundry at first and kept seeing larvae reappear. Once everything was washed or sealed, sightings dropped fast.
Seeing adults doesn’t mean the infestation is active there. Adults fly toward windows, larvae do the damage. Focus on larvae zones.
Vacuum → laundry → declutter → seal cracks → then light residual insecticide along baseboards. Took weeks, not days.
You’re doing the right thing by asking early. Carpet beetles are annoying but manageable if you stay systematic and patient.
