I see a tiny roach every now and then — how serious is that?

Hi folks,
I’m trying to figure out how concerned I should be. Every so often — maybe once every week or two — I spot a tiny roach in my apartment, usually late at night in the kitchen or bathroom. It’s always small, never full-sized, and I never see more than one at a time.

I keep the place fairly clean, don’t leave food out, and take the trash out regularly, so I’m confused about whether this is just a stray roach wandering in or a sign of something bigger going on behind the scenes.

Small roaches are more concerning than big ones. Adults can wander in, but babies usually mean they’re breeding somewhere nearby.

I had the same pattern, one every week or so. Turned out they were German and living behind the fridge. I wish I’d acted sooner.

Frequency matters a lot. One a month is very different from one every few days, even if they’re tiny.

@WorriedRenter88 If you’re only seeing them at night, that’s another red flag. Roaches are good at staying hidden until numbers grow.

That said, not every small roach means disaster. In older buildings, you can get travelers from neighboring units.

As someone in the field: sporadic nymph sightings usually mean an early-stage infestation. That’s actually the best time to deal with it.

I wouldn’t rely on sprays. Put down sticky traps under the sink and near appliances, they tell you a lot in just a few days.

@CalmTenant Agreed. When my neighbor moved out, their roaches temporarily migrated into my unit even though I didn’t have an infestation myself.

Big roaches stress people out, but small ones are the ones that should really get your attention.

If you’re seeing babies, don’t wait. Early action is cheaper, easier, and way less stressful.
