**Hey everyone!**
I recently discovered signs of rats in my basement and garage, and now I’m trying to figure out how many traps I should actually set.

Some people say just a couple near the problem area is enough, while others recommend placing multiple traps throughout the house. I don’t want to underdo it — but I also don’t want traps everywhere unnecessarily.

For those who’ve handled a rat issue at home, how many traps did you end up using, and did placement matter more than quantity?

More than you think. If you suspect multiple rats, two traps probably won’t cut it.

I used about 6 in my basement alone. Rats can be cautious, so multiple traps increase your odds.

Placement is just as important as quantity. Along walls and near entry points worked best for me.

@BasementGuardBeth Did you space them out or cluster them together?

I usually recommend at least 3–4 per affected area. Better to overdo it at first.

If you only set one trap and it misfires, you lose time. Multiple traps prevent that delay.

@SealEntrySue I agree about entry points. Catching them early in their route makes a difference.

I started with 2 and quickly realized it wasn’t enough. Ended up doubling that.

Don’t forget attic and garage spaces. Rats don’t always stay in one zone.

In my experience, starting with more traps shortens the whole process.

**Thanos Home note:** For rat control, using too few traps is one of the most common reasons results look slow.

A useful rule of thumb:

- For one suspected travel path, start with 2 traps in opposite directions along the wall.
- For a garage, attic, shed, or basement, use multiple placements instead of one central trap.
- For outdoor activity, place traps near protected runways, fence lines, or burrow-adjacent travel paths.
- If activity continues after several nights, move traps before adding more bait.
