Do wasps live in the ground?

@GroundDigger Adding to that, some solitary species also build tiny burrows for their larvae. Not all wasps are communal like yellowjackets.

I always check for soft or sunken patches in the yard before watering. That way, I’m less likely to disrupt a hidden nest, or get stung in the process.

Around here, I’ve seen holes about an inch wide in garden beds, that’s usually a tell-tale sign of ground-nesting wasps. Worth being cautious.

I tried to dig up some weeds and nearly went hands-first into a wasp tunnel. Lesson learned: always rake the soil gently first.

Not exactly the same as bees, but ground wasps can be aggressive if their nest is disturbed. I spray with water early morning when they’re less active, then relocate if needed.

@GardenerGal That’s a smart tip! I also sprinkle diatomaceous earth lightly around suspected spots, it seems to deter them from digging right near our patio.

Last fall, a colony I “disturbed” ended up rebuilding in a crack by the foundation. Ground wasps are persistent if there’s suitable soil and shelter.

Identify the general area of nesting, avoid heavy activity nearby, and wait for their season to end. In late fall, many colonies die off naturally.
