I’ve been gardening for decades and have used coffee grounds for composting, but I’ve never noticed it affecting snake presence hahaha.

I don’t think there’s any factual evidence that coffee grounds are a snake repellent. Most snakes are more influenced by their habitat and prey.

I started experimenting with sprinkling coffee grounds around my garden last year to keep snakes away. Because I’m afraid of snakes, but unfortunately it doesn’t seem to do much. I found a sling snake next to the coffee grounds fence.

Lily,I wonder if it depends on the type of snake? Maybe garter snakes don’t mind it, but others do. I’m curious if there’s any real evidence behind this.

Snakes primarily rely on their sense of smell and heat detection to navigate, not so much on deterring compounds. The coffee grounds might be an old wives’ tale.

As a herpetologist, I can confirm there’s no scientific evidence supporting this claim. Snakes are much more likely to be deterred by habitat modification like removing shelters and food sources.

Even if coffee grounds aren’t effective at keeping snakes away, they definitely have other benefits in the garden, I use coffee grounds as a compost additive, they add nitrogen to the compost pile, which helps plants grow. In addition, they help retain moisture and attract earthworms, and prevent local pests such as ants and slugs.
