Confused flour beetle infestation — how do I get rid of them for good?

Hi folks,

I’m hoping someone here has cracked the code on this because I’m officially losing patience. I’ve been dealing with what I’m pretty sure are confused flour beetles for months now. I clean them out, think they’re gone, and then a few weeks later they’re back in the pantry again.

I’ve tossed out flour, rice, pasta — anything that looked even remotely suspicious — but they keep reappearing. At this point I’m wondering if I’m missing a key step.

First thing: they’re almost always coming from something you missed. Even a forgotten box in the back of a cabinet can keep them going.

Airtight containers helped me a lot, but only after I did a full pantry purge. Anything cardboard had to go.

Don’t forget spices and pet food. That’s where mine were hiding, not the obvious stuff.

@PantryWoes Cleaning alone won’t solve it if the source stays inside. They can survive a surprisingly long time without much food.

Vacuuming cracks and shelf holes matters more than people think. Mine were nesting along the shelf pin holes.

I stopped buying in bulk for a while. Smaller quantities made it way easier to notice problems early.

Freezing new flour for 3–4 days before storing it helped prevent reinfestation for me.

@BugTruths Same experience here. Once I missed a single unopened pasta box and that reset everything.

Glass or metal containers only. Plastic didn’t always seal well enough in my case.

It took about two months after removing the source before I stopped seeing them completely. Annoying, but doable.
