I installed two solar repeller stakes last summer around my lawn where armadillo diggings were frequent. I saw fewer holes, but I can’t say they’re 100 % effective yet, just part of the solution.

Many of these stakes focus on vibration or sound waves. If the soil is extremely loose or full of water, the signal may not travel as well. Spot placement matters.

@YardDefenseDonna Thanks for sharing your results! I’m curious which model you used and how far apart the stakes were. That spacing may impact coverage.

This kind of tool has a big plus: eco-friendly, non-lethal. For armadillos, which are often protected or at least disliked, using a deterrent instead of traps is a good idea.

I experimented with a few solar stakes and after heavy rain they stopped working properly. So I wouldn’t rely only on them, have backup plans for wet seasons.

Combine stakes with habitat changes: eliminate exposed insect larvae, remove surface water, fill burrows. That way the stakes reinforce a less-attractive yard instead of trying to fight alone.

@GardenGuardianGrace Make sure the stakes are at the perimeter of your property or along the fence line, armadillos often enter from borders. Central placement may miss incoming traffic.

These stakes cost less than major trapping setups and are easy to install. If they reduce damage even 50 %, they might pay for themselves in repair savings.

Are solar repellent stakes “magic”? Probably not. But as part of a layered approach (stakes + exclusion + drainage + monitoring) they’re very worthwhile.
