Are Mouse Traps Safe for Cats?

My strategy is to use traps only in areas where I know my cats don’t roam. It takes a little extra planning, but it keeps everyone safe.

I’ve had a very curious cat at home, so I opted for traps that are either enclosed or placed in high-traffic areas where she isn’t allowed.

The risk often comes down to how accessible the traps are. I recommend always checking your trap placements to ensure your pets can’t reach them.

While snap traps are effective, I’ve switched to covered traps after learning that they can prevent accidental triggers by pets like my cat.

Before installing any traps, I always consult reviews from other pet owners. It’s reassuring to know that many have successfully used pet-safe models without issues.

@backpack_dad I’d avoid glue traps completely! My neighbor’s cat got stuck on one last year - took hours to free her safely. Humane traps are worth the extra cost.

Has anyone tried peppermint oil soaked cotton balls? Mice hate the smell but it’s harmless to cats. Just refresh every few days near entry points.

Place snap traps inside PVC pipes (3" diameter). Mice can enter but cats can’t reach the mechanism. Works like a charm in my workshop!

@furryguardian Which electronic trap model do you use? My curious Bengal keeps investigating my current one and I’m worried about his paws.
