Are butterflies attracted to bug zappers?

Do bug zappers affect the overall population of butterflies?

Highly unlikely. Butterflies are not significantly impacted by bug zappers since they aren’t attracted to them.

@natureguy5 True, their population is more affected by factors like habitat loss and pesticide use rather than bug zappers.

Plus, their active times don’t intersect much with when bug zappers are typically in use.

Exactly, daytime activity means they’re less likely to encounter a bug zapper.

I’ve always been more worried about pesticides affecting butterflies rather than bug zappers.

Nice topic, this explains it well. Butterflies are more into flowers and scent than UV light, so chances of them getting zapped are low unless it’s a weird case of dusk confusion.

@ScienceBuffBen Good point about environment, if there are no brighter lights around, a zapper might look ‘interesting’ to a butterfly. Rare, but possible.

I’ve seen a few flutter by once or twice, but honestly, moths, flies, and beetles dominate the kill tray every morning. Butterflies just don’t make up much of the zap population.

To protect butterflies, I use a combo of LED string lights and citronella candles, no UV, fewer nighttime bugs, and still a nice backyard vibe.

@HomeHelper True, they’re diurnal creatures, and UV zappers are mostly nighttime tech. Still, if someone’s using one around a pollinator garden, they might want to think twice.
